Govt. to scrap ‘Press and Publication Ordinance’ soon: Sherry Rehman

LAHORE: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman Saturday said the government believes in free media policy and has amended PEMRA ordinance to ensure free access to information. “Press and Publication Ordinance would also be scraped soon,” said the minister while speaking at a seminar on ‘International Summit for Journalists Safety and Ethics’ organized by Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and International Federation of Journalists at a local hotel. She said free media is pre-requisite for strengthening democratic institution, ensuring good governance and running administrative affairs in a better way. She said that access to complete, correct and unbiased information is the right of every citizen and government would provide all possible help to journalists’ institutions in this regard. The minister said that an effective code of ethics would help journalists to perform their professional duties in better way. General Secretary International Federal Union of Journalists (IFUJ), President Pakistan Union of Journalists Huma Ali, General Secretary Mazhar Abbas, Prof. Dr. Mehdi Hassan , Muhammad Malik and Anjum Rashid spoke about difficulties facing the journalists in performing their professional duties. In the International Summit for Journalists Safety and Ethics, a 25-point draft code of conduct was presented highlighting importance of upholding the highest professional and ethical standards by journalists. The Minister assured that government would not only welcome their positive proposals but also fully benefit from the same in formation of code of conduct.
