Senate discusses ISI issue, Karzai’s threats to Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The Senate held meeting on Monday amid widening rifts between the four-month-old coalition partners over several key issues, including the reinstatement of the sacked judges while opposition leader said ISI faux pas, criticism surrounding premier’s visit to US was also the point in the course of session. The opposition, which requisitioned the session, took the government to task in the 45th session of the upper house over its ‘failure’ to respond to Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s threats to Pakistan. “We raised the issue of Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai’s threats to Pakistan and our government’s muted response to his statements,” Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Kamil Ali Agha told media. He said the country’s internal security was also deteriorating, adding that people were very concerned about the worsening law and order situation. Regarding ISI, US visit, he said the opposition discussed the controversy arising from the government’s decision to place the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) under the Interior Ministry. “When we discussed the internal threats facing our country, the issue of control of the ISI was also debated and we sought the government’s explanation of it,” he said. The opposition leader said that another matter of interest was the criticism surrounding the lack of results arising from Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani’s maiden visit to the United States last week. The opposition, he added, also defended their plan to add certain amendments to the local bodies system. Kamil Ali Agha also said that the ever-increasing inflation, in addition to unprecedented petroleum prices, had put undue pressure on the poor of the nation. He said the opposition certainly brought up the issue during the Senate proceedings. Rumour circulating in political circles, however, suggested that the swiftly-changing political scenario of the country, particularly Tuesday’s crucial meeting between Pakistan People’s Party Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief Nawaz Sharif, might eclipse the importance of the another expected brief Senate session.
