Impeachment move looks constitutional: US

WASHINGTON: The United States on Thursday underscored it is up to the Pakistanis to decide about leadership of their country, with a senior official saying moving forward on impeachment proceedings appears to be within Pakistan’s constitution, APP reported. US Press Secretary Dana Perino reaffirmed Washington’s pledge to continue working with the new elected government. To a question at the daily media briefing, the spokeswoman discounted the possibility of any military coup in Pakistan. “I haven’t heard of a military coup on the cards. I think if they are moving forward on impeachment proceedings, it seems to be within their constitution and that they’re following their own laws,” she said. President George W Bush, she said, is being “regularly briefed on it, and he is going to let Pakistanis make the decisions on who will be in the leadership of their country”. “We will continue to work with the new government,” she said, answering a question on various reports, some of them claiming that President Pervez Musharraf is contemplating to step down imminently in the wake of coalition parties impeachment decision. Perino, according to Reuters, referred to reports of Musharraf’s resignation plan as a “rumour mill”. State Department spokesman Robert Wood said the US would not comment on the reports. agencies
