Boucher pledges close ties with new government
WASHINGTON: The United States will continue to be a partner of Pakistan’s new democratic government and aid in the country’s development, US Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia Richard Boucher said on Tuesday. Speaking following General (r) Pervez Musharraf’s resignation as the president, he pledged America’s commitment to a close relationship with Pakistan. He appreciated that Pakistan’s new elected government saw the fight against terrorism as its own fight. “We recognise that the new government is there with a programme that it is going to follow, and we are going to be partners for Pakistan and partners of the new government and work with them,” he told the Voice of America in an interview. He said the US was co-operating with Pakistan in numerous areas including democratic development, the people’s socio-economic uplift and security issues. app
