Prolonged power outages trigger protests across country
KARACHI: Enraged citizens staged protests in major cities across the country, as severe load shedding in Karachi, Quetta, Peshawar and other cities badly affects daily life. In Karachi the electricity situation turned from bad to worse when unit-5 of Bin Qasim power plant tripped after developing a technical fault, increasing the number of powerless hours in the city. According to KESC, the closure of the plant has led to suspension of supply of 220 MW electricity to the city which is now facing a total power shortage of 1000 MW. The frequent and prolonged load shedding has severely affected the daily life activities of the city. The total shortage of electricity being faced by the country has climbed to a whopping 4,500 MW. The KESC is alternating three-hour long power load shedding with one hour of supplying electricity in the city, making the citizens suffer in the increasing heat. The increased load shedding is also causing shortage of drinking water.
