In-house women’s protection bill moved in National Assembly

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Tuesday referred a bill to the concerned standing committee for providing legal protection to women working at homes for hire or reward. PML-Q member Riaz Fatiana moved the bill named as In-House Women’s Protection Act, 2008 that was not opposed to by Law Minister Farooq Naik. The bill proposes the wages of such women be fixed and a wage commission be set up in this regard. It suggested that every owner should be required to pay wages of the in-house workingwomen weekly. On failure to make the payment, the owner shall be liable to pay Rs 5 per day for every hundred rupee of the salary or part thereof. The bill says each provincial government shall establish a fund called “In-House Workers Fund” that will be used to help the needy workers. There are also recommendations on legal covers of insurance, maternity benefits and medical facilities. The bill further says that any lady worker may bring her grievance to a labour court in case of a violation of any right guaranteed or secured by the act. Talking to Daily Times, Riaz Fatiana said the rights of poor women working at homes for hire or reward were being completely ignored by the government and there is a need to make laws for their protection. The lower house also referred a bill moved by Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho to amend the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Ordinance, 2007. Law Minister Farooq Naik opposed some amendments suggested by PPP MNA Syed Alla-ud-Din in the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly. staff report
