Presidency denies hand in postponement
ISLAMABAD: The Aiwan-e-Sadr on Monday refuted claims that the by-elections had been delayed by two months – from June 18 to August 18 – on the orders of President Pervez Musharraf. Sources within the Aiwan-e-Sadr said that the Election Commission of Pakistan was an autonomous body, which takes decisions of its own accord and is not bound to the president. They also said that the president had not issued any directives regarding the timeframe of the by-elections. The sources believed that the Election Commission had likely taken the decision in light of the country’s present circumstances, especially the law and order situation in the NWFP. online
